Electrical is taught over 4 years with the 4th year solely based in the workplace. The first three years is to establish skills and ability to perform within the electrical environment in your workplace. Some aspects of skill and competence will be assessed during the first three years with an increase in focus coming as the fourth year begins. Understanding Health and Safety legislation, practices and procedures
- (Installing and maintaining electrotechnical systems and equipment)
- Understanding environmental legislation, working practices and the principles of environmental technology systems
- Understanding the practices and procedures for overseeing and organising the work environment (Electrical Installation)
- Understanding the principles of planning and selection for the installation of electrotechnical equipment and systems in buildings, structures and the environment
- Understanding the practices and procedures for the preparation and installation of wiring systems and electrotechnical equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
- Understanding the principles, practices and legislation for the termination and connection of conductors, cables and cords in electrical systems
- Understanding principles, practices and legislation for the inspection, testing, commissioning and certification of electrotechnical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment

The electrical course is a combined qualification. This means that you will not qualify in any qualification unless you complete both the tuition and the workplace aspects of the course. The bottom 7-8 topics are all completed in the workplace. You will be informed about the tasks you need to be assessed in the workplace when you are inducted on the course
You are required to be in paid employment (Which we can help you to find), self-employment is not allowed.
Assessment Method
The technical certificate (knowledge units) is tested via an online exam which is taken after a period of training. The practical work is completed after training in core and specific skills to the area you are working in. Each practical test will stretch and improve your skills in a sequence to get you to the level and competence required.
The NVQ aspects of the course are completed via on site assessment in the workplace. This is completed via observed work, evidence from witnesses and discussions in relation to knowledge of the construction environment. You must connect, encase and test a range of items within the workplace twice to prove competence over time for identified tasks. You will be told these items when you start the course.
You will be able to work as a qualified Electrician on domestic, industrial and commercial locations. The work will involve the installation of different types of cables and using a variety of installation methods for each system, as well as this you will be able to use inspecting /fault finding techniques required for electrical installation.
